Nella Saastamoinen

About Me

My name is Nella and I’m from Finland with half of my family from Egypt. My family heritage and family members influence a lot of the themes that I work with. I have a background in Graphic Design but fell in love with Digital 3D work and environment building. I love problem-solving, idea building, and especially enjoy bringing people’s ideas to life; whether it’s on a physical or digital canvas. I enjoy working with my hands and one of my biggest hobbies is crocheting. If I’m not working on art, cooking, or other physical crafts I can be found crocheting blankets, tapestries, pot holders, and amigurumi.

Project Description

Mushrooms to the Moon is a project that creates a walkable digital 3D environment from an original 2D illustration. It is inspired by nature and fantasy and explores the differences in the experience and creation of 2D versus 3D projects.

What are you most looking forward to after the pandemic?

Traveling to Finland. I recently became engaged and it would be nice to be able to take my fiance back home to spend time with my family.

What’s something that is always on your work desk?

I always keep items that cheer me up or allow me to fidget on my work desk. Currently, there is a pink sloth succulent pot, rubber ducks, and a Tonttu (Finnish Gnome) from my great-aunt that watches over my work. I also keep a mini-slinky at hand to play with when I get stuck.
